Bonneval and Ecot : two Alpine gems
Fall in love with one of the most beautiful villages in France, at an altitude of over 1,800 metres
Close to the limits of the Upper Maurienne region, discover Bonneval-sur-Arc, which has been awarded the title of “one the most beautiful villages in France”. Nestling at an altitude of 1,800 metres, its stone and wooden houses feature balconies which were used to dry grebons, a mixture of straw and cow dung. Once dry, these were used as fuel during the winter. Upstream, alpine chalets, protected under preservation law, are scattered here and there along the Lenta valley.
Not to be missed: the climb, in summer or winter (on snowshoes), up to Ecot (2,027 m), the hamlet in perfect harmony with its mountain environment. This is one of the most attractive points of Nicolas Vanier’s Grande Odysée winter itinerary. It is also where the secluded holiday home of Patrice Riboud (brother of Danone’s CEO) is to be found. The village of Ecot is not only a place to fall in love with, it is the starting point for three renowned hiking trails: to the Carro refuge, to sources of the Arc, and to the Evettes glacier.
