Nedelino

The municipality of Nedelino is situated in the southeastern part of the Smolyan region on a strongly broken mountain and forest landscape. Its administrative centre, town Nedelino, is surrounded by two majestic peaks: “Saint Nedelya” and “Saint Iliya” and is located in the valley of the river Nedelinska, some 18 km away from Zlatograd. It is named after the beautiful girl Nedelya. She gave her name also to the fortress and the monastery “Saint Nedelya”, whose ruins are preserved 3-4 km to the south of the town. The altitude of the municipality is 400-500 m. To the south it borders on Zlatograd, to the east – on Kirkovo, Dzhebel and Ardino, and to the north – on Madan.

The region of Nedelino is unique with its traditional folklore heritage. Typical for this place is the rare for Bulgaria singing in two voices of authentic folk songs. This type of singing is not only a spiritual bridge to the inner parts of the country, but also a thread which takes to the original Thracian-Slavic sources. Traditionally, in Nedelino a National folklore festival is held, which brings together amateurs from all folklore regions in Bulgaria, and foreign groups.
