Where the river comes from

The Sorgenti del Piave Refuge stands near the source of the River Piave, 1830 meters above the sea level, on a grassy highland in the midst of the intact Visdende Valley. It can be reached from Cima Sappada either by walking a couple of hours, or - perhaps less properly - by car.

The refuge is open in summertime only, and it is privately run by the Piller Hoffer family. The majestic Mount Peralba rises behind. Around, some signposted paths lead to a series of old walkways of the First World War. The Sorgenti del Piave Refuge is a stopover along the Alta Via numero 6 (or High Route number 6), also known as the Alta Via dei Silenzi (or High Route of Silences), a 180-kilometers-long signposted hiking route connecting to the town of Vittorio Veneto. From the Sorgenti del Piave, a walk of about an hour takes to the Calvi Refuge in the Upper Sesis Valley. To do so, the pillar dedicated to the source of the River Piave must be first retraced, close to which a path undergoing Mount Peralba is to be taken. Once a marble cave is reached, a path on the left, signposted 132, is the way.
